John Boehner Announces New Cannabis Lobby “National Cannabis Roundtable”

Boehner will provide “strategic guidance” to the new trade group

The cannabis industry is standing up a new trade group with a little help from former House Speaker John Boehner, who’s become a high-profile advocate for legalizing the drug. Boehner joined the cannabis concern Acreage Holdings’ board of advisers last year and later wrote an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal calling for legalization. He’ll provide “strategic guidance” to the new trade group, the National Cannabis Roundtable, as honorary chairman. Acreage is one of the trade group’s members.

The new group has hired Squire Patton Boggs, where Boehner is a senior strategic adviser, and the Liaison Group to lobby on its behalf, according to the group. (Boehner has never registered as a lobbyist, though, and won’t be lobbying himself.) HDMK will handle strategic communications. The new coalition won’t be the only umbrella group advocating on the issue. The Cannabis Trade Federation recently hired Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, the Raben Group and VS Strategies to lobby on Congress and the Justice Department, according to disclosure filings.
